Pedigree isn’t everything but let’s start with the fact Italian born Matteo Mistura was a chef at the Four Seasons before opening his own Pizzeria on the Blue Course in Wailea. Whether attributable to his ancestry or artistry, Matteo’s Pizzeria quickly became a favored dining spot for local business owners, residents and visitors alike.
WCM would tend to give the credit to the pizza, both simple and unique varieties. Try the Quatro Staggione with artichoke, black olives, mushrooms and prosciutto either mixed all over or isolated into four different sections of pie for picky eaters, or the Ligurian with pesto, mascarpone and shrimp for more audacious diners. Vegetarian, four cheese, meat lovers and Cowboy, with roasted chicken and barbeque sauce, round out the menu with something for everyone.
It’s a simple affair at Matteo’s. In spite of being located in tony Wailea, just up the hill from the chic Shops, there is nothing stuffy or haute about this restaurant. There is a casual function to the place; diners order at a counter then take a seat inside or at open-air tables on the lanai to watch the sunset or relax. Meals are delivered by members of the staff. In the early evenings, families pack the place especially this month while Matteo’s is promoting ½ price pizza and half-off select wines from 5-6 p.m. Every day the keiki pasta menu is only $5-6.99, an awesome deal!
Pizzas come in two sizes – the purported “Individual” 10 inch pizza which is a thin crusted hand-thrown number with a variety of toppings. You can easily share if you order a salad with that – a Caprese or Spinach with candied walnuts, dried cranberries, feta and balsamic, also offered half-size at lunch for only $3.99.
The lunch and dinner menus are essentially the same but lunch is an even better value than dinner. The largest and most expensive pizza on the menu – the 16 inch thick crust meat lover’s special – is $24.99 at dinner and $21.99 at lunch. Most other entrées are between $10-18, including the unique “Lamb Pasta” made with short noodles, braised lamb and caramelized vegetable ragu.
For those only wanting a quick bite and drink, maybe after a round of golf or mid-day pick-u-up, the appetizer menu offers some tasty options including the Beef Carpaccio for $9.99, and the unique Portofino, focaccia bread with potatoes, pesto and mascarpone cheese.
A nice selection of desserts for $4.99 each such as Cheesecake with Mango Sauce, Tiramisu, and Chocolate Mousse, top off the meal.
