Pilates for Pink: One of the Many Breast Cancer Awareness Programs on Maui

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many Maui restaurants are doing their part to support the search for the cure. Here are just a few:

Hard Rock Cafe is hosting a benefit for the fight against breast cancer October 23, 2009, 10 p.m. for guests over 21. For ten years running, Hard Rock Café’s around the country have hosted “Pinktober” events, held in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month. The Lahaina location will host reggae collective Natural Vibrations and auction a signed Ziggy Marley guitar on October 21, with proceeds going to the Pacific Cancer Foundation. For more information click on this link.

The market is practically flooded with Breast Cancer partnership products these days and this one from the Maui Brewing Company caught the eye of What’s Cooking Maui staff. As it said in MBC’s [promotional email blast, “In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, we designed our new SAVE THE CANS! shirts.  5% of each shirt sold will be donated to the White Labs’ ‘Beer for Boobs’ team and benefits the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.” We’ll drink a Bikini Blond Lager to that! You can order a shirt here.

We keep telling you to get out there and eat, eat, eat but of course that means you also have to work, work, work it off and what better way to do that but with Pilates for Pink mat classes. October 12-17 at Body in Balance Pilates Studio, in conjunction with Pilates studios around the country, is hosting the fitness fund raiser as part of Shape magazine’s support for the search for the cure. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to prevention and cure. Body in Balance has set a goal of raising $250 through individual donations of $10 or more for the Pilates Mat classes. Class hours are:

10/12, 5:30 p.m.

10/13, 8:45 a.m.

10/15, 6 p.m.

10/16, 8:30 a.m.

10/17, 10 a.m.

The Pink Paddlers, all breast cancer survivors, oncology medical professionals or friends who want to support them, will embark on a Paddle for Hope in an outrigger canoe from Maui to Lanai and back. Two canoes with alternating crews of six paddlers each, along with support boats and support teams will involve over 100 participants in the event,  sponsored by the Pacific Cancer Foundation’s Mana`olana paddling program.  The Kihei Canoe Club donated use of the training facilities while Pacific Helicopters, Doc Martin Sunscreen, Paddle Me Sportswear, Olu Kai Sandals, Maui Oil Company, Powerhouse Gym and the Safeway Foundation contributed to their inspirational journey. If you’d like to lend support call Karen Bouris at 808-276-7745 or email her at karenbouris@gmail.com.
