At the Maui Film Festival, June 17 – 21, in Wailea, attendees can enjoy stunning visual displays of creative filmmaking presented in a heart-achingly gorgeous venue while indulging in some of the most decadent, sybaritic, lip-smacking delicacies available anywhere.
Start with the Taste of Chocolate at the Four Seasons, Wailea, Friday, June 19, 10 p.m. to midnight. Here’s reason to stay up late when the air cools and the very word “chocolate” produces warm waves of pleasure. Peruse table after table of all things cocao; cakes, candies, pastries, sorbet, fondue. Whether frozen, whipped, liquefied, melted or molten, goodies crafted from the humble bean have been transformed by a cadre of culinary masters into little dollops of heaven on earth. Choose as much as you want from the vast selection of glossy, fudgy, gooey, heady, endorphin-releasing CHOCK-O-LATTA yum-yums and temporarily satisfy all traces of lingering childhood longings. Yes, chocolate really does have that much power. Tickets are $120 in advance, $150 at the door.
The next day, sleep in, catch a few films, and eat hearty Saturday night at the Taste of Wailea, June 20, 4:30-7 p.m. at the Dave Ledbetter Golf Academy, where the south side’s best chefs will attempt to outdo one another. Ko, Nick’s Fish Market, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Mulligan’s on the Blue, Matteo’s Pizzeria, Bistro Molokini, Wolfgang Puck’s Spago, MALA, and Capische?and Il Teatro, will reveal unique specialties, actively seeking your approval. Tickets are $95 in advance and $150 at the door.
Out there, along the shore, under the sun and stars, participants can experience what organizer Barry Rivers refers to in this paraphrased quote from Albert Einstin on the Maui Film Festival website, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mystery of the universe. It is more important than knowledge and is the source of all true art, science and imagination.”
And that, my dear readers, is even more powerful than chocolate.
