On June 1, 2010, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa welcomes Montana State University’s 1 O’Clock Jazz Band for a week-long celebration of jazz and music and arts education awareness. A 17-piece Big Band, MSU students will be on-island performing numerous live toe-tapping performances at Hyatt Regency Maui from June 1-4, leading up to Plantation Jazz – a spectacular event to benefit The Arts Education for Children Group at the Rainbow House on The Ka’anapali Coffee Farms on June 5.
One of the premiere ensembles in Montana State University’s School of Music, the 1 O’clock Jazz Band has an extensive performance schedule each year promoting and supporting jazz and jazz music education. The band performs concerts, offers clinics and hosts workshops for all levels of jazz bands. Many band members have received outstanding soloist awards from the International Association of Jazz Educators, and the band has also been awarded prizes and superior ratings at jazz festivals and competitions. They have been directed since 2006 by Shuichi Komiyama, himself an Emmy Award winning composer, and a former Artistic Director of Arts Education for Children Group on Maui.
Meet the Band –Jazzing It Up at the Hyatt – To start the week of jazz, locals and resort guests can enjoy the big band sounds of the 1 O’Clock Jazz Band at the Hyatt Regency Maui from June 1– 4, as the group offers numerous live performances scattered throughout the resort’s idyllic oceanfront grounds. Stick your toes into the warm sand at Umalu, and enjoy any of their wonderful pupus such as Ahi Nachos or Duck Quesadillas at the resort’s chic poolside destination venue, while listening to the jazz trio from 12pm–2pm, a big band Happy Hour every evening from 4pm-6pm, and a trio – the perfect dinner music – from 7pm-9pm nightly. Halona Kai, Hyatt’s atrium lobby bar, will feature jazz vocals from 5pm-7pm and soft acoustic jazz in the evenings from 7pm – 9pm. Son’z of Maui, with the State’s largest wine cellar and some of Maui’s best cuisine, will host a Swing Big Band on Thursday, June 3 from 9pm-11pm. The series will conclude with a bang on Friday, June 4, as Umalu hosts a spectacular Big Band Rhythm & Blues Pool Party from 6pm-10pm.
Jazz With Heart –
On Wednesday, June 5th from 5pm-10pm at the Rainbow House on The Ka’anapali Coffee Farms, The 1 O’Clock Jazz Band will perform as part of Plantation Jazz, a spectacular event to benefit The Arts Education for Children Group (AECG). A non-profit organization fostering music and arts education in Maui, the AECG is dedicated to providing opportunities for kids to play here in Maui and committed to helping restore music programs in our schools by raising public awareness about its importance. The event will include gourmet appetizers and sushi selections provided by Chef Casey Piquet and beverages from Kona Red Coffee Fruit. Other evening highlights include a silent auction, a live interactive game show “The Family Feud” with Gameshow Fanatics, an introduction to “Guitars in the Classroom” (coming in October), and art exhibitions, creating a unique forum for discussion of music and arts education. Tickets are $100 per person and include all entertainment, food and drinks. Discounts available for large parties.
