Halloween on Maui, 2010

Pretty Scary Kids

Whether your version of celebration involves dancing in the moonlight with the truly wicked or lurking in the shadows with the merely winsome, Halloween is a time honored festival with roots in ancient harvest festivals, a time when the cycle of life is acknowledged, feared and simultaneously revered. But enough with the philosophy – on Maui the party is on! Join in any or all of the following, many for a good cause far beyond your personal amusement.

MAUI ONSTAGE’S 5TH ANNUAL HAUNTED HOUSE

From 6 -9 pm the brave among us are invited to take a tour of the scariest haunted house on Maui. The chills are so frightening, in fact, that it’s not recommended for keiki or the more impressionable scardy-cats. Ghosts, witches, goblins and the return of the “Thriller Dancers” will generate more excitement than the Rocky Horror Glee Show! Only $4 for adults and $2 for those under sixteen who can handle the intensity of it all! Repeated again on October 30 and 31st.

LAHAINA KEIKI PARADE

The cutest parade on earth continues down Front Street thanks to West Maui Soroptimists, the Lahaina Sunrise Rotary and Lahaina Rotary Clubs who pitched in to stage the 32nd annual Keiki Halloween Costume Parade beginning at 4:30 pm. Keiki start at Papalaua Street and sashay down Front Street in their finery, ending up at the Banyan Tree Park where they will collect a trick-or-treat bag of candy. Closing the parade, the Lahianaluan High School Marching Band and Cheerleaders will perform – and for me, the sound of a marching band sends more chills down my spine than any old spook house would. Let’s hope this fine, wholesome tradition carries on long into the future.

HALLOWEEN CANNERY MALL FAMILY FUN DAY

Lahaina Cannery Mall’s annual family celebration of all things Halloween just got larger. The west Maui center will host an all-ages “Haunted House” each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the end of the month.

HALLOWEEN IN LAHAINA

Permits be damned, the Lahaina Town Action Committee is hosting two events on Front Street starting with an event strictly for the high school set – students in grades 8-12 are invited to a Halloween Bash from 6-10 pm featuring a costume contest, party favors, rooftop dancing at the former Oyster Bar location, food beverages and DJ Zinn spinning the tunes. Next up is Halloween Hell Night, as you can tell from the title, a bit harder core event in the basement of 744 Front Street. A full bar, DJ, drinks specials set the stage for showing off your costume and having a great time indoors, since Front Street is officially opened to vehicular traffic this Halloween. Admission is $10.

HARD ROCK LAHAINA

A great strategy for Halloween costume contest winners is to rack ‘em up, one each night in varying neighborhoods. Say you won at Diamond’s on Saturday – time to take your bewigged, bedecked self over to Hard Rock in Lahaina for the midnight contest of all contests – a whopping $150 first place prize, followed with a not so shabby $100 second, and where 3rd place winners can only be called concession prizes elsewhere, at Hard Rock even the lowest guy on the podium gets $50, which given the $4 Heineken draft specials is enough to win you lots of friends when you buy that round. Get Your Freak On, as the ad says, with DJ 007. I see dancing in your future…

KIWI ROADHOUSE HALLOWEEN BASH – ALL DAY

On the actual day when haunting spirits roam the earthly realm, take refuge at Kiwi Roadhouse’s fun-filled line up of activities sure to take your mind off the shadow in the corner.
Keiki Activities 11-3 pm include costume contest, ½ off kids meals, grab bags and other fun.
Adult are invited 6-9 pm for drink specials, costume contest with cash prizes and great food, like their Kiwi Burger complete with beetroot and fried egg (which looks scrumptious) and other burgers guaranteed to line your stomach for the night’s festivities.

PINEAPPLE GRILL KAPALUA, 5:30 – WITCHING HOUR

The third annual Kapalua alternative to partying down on Front Street, now that Front Street Halloween is no more, offers ½ off selected bar menu at this award winning slinger of sumptuous cuisine, along with super solicitous bar specials. A Halloween Costume Contest awards the first place winner $100, which is likely enough to cover the cost of those “devil in the details” accessories you went all out for again this year. Scotty Rotten and Friends play dance worthy music 7:30-10:30 again this year.
HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE OUT THERE! WISHING YOU ALL TREATS AND NO TRICKS.
