This year we’ve noticed a trend – perhaps to overcompensate for the lack of an official Halloween in Lahaina, there’s been a preponderance of Oktoberfest type celebrations and frankly, we’re happy to see it. What’s Cooking Maui can never get enough German beer, oompah musik, sausages and rollicking good times. A good harvest, the marriage of a German Prince, cooler temps in Lahaina, a sold out Noble Chef’s Event are all worth celebrating in a big way.
As is the good work of the Maui Human Society. Show your support and have a great time doing it at the upcoming Barktoberfest Fund Raiser being held at the beautiful Sheraton Kaanapali Resort, October 16, 2010, 5-10 p.m. Super sized entertainment will be on hand, along with Maui Brewing Company, delivering their award winning, awesome beers such as ‘rough as you are Wild Hog Stout and the ever-loveable CoCoNut Porter. (Maui Brew will also be hosting their own Oktoberfest Oct. 30th at their Brewery in Lahaina – more on that later.)
If your appreciation for German food goes beyond wurstchen, you’ll be happy to find gourmet German fare at this particular event, including Stuffed Chicken Cordon Bleu, Kase-Spatzle, Kassler Rippchen, Fire Roasted Apple Strudel, vegetarian options and much more.
While you are dining and jawohl-ing, Shaggy, “Barktoberfest” emcee, will keep the stage lively with music by Lisa Owen and The Village Musicians (Hawaii’s singular oompah band – and the island’s best!), Paia’s own Haiku Hillbillys and the crowd pleasing Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats.
All of the proceeds from “Barktoberfest” will provide safe and nurturing shelter, food and veterinary care for animals in need, help reunite lost pets with their families, and help orphans find loving forever homes.
Advance ticket prices are $60 for adults and $30 for children ages 5-12; keiki four years and under will be admitted free. Purchase tickets at www.MauiHumaneSociety.org or by calling 877-3680, extension 34.
The Sheraton Maui is offering a special rate on guest rooms for those who would like to stay overnight at the resort. The rate is $129 plus tax and resort fee; call 661-0031.
