Smokehouse Barbeque Bar and Grill, Lahaina, Maui

930 Wainee Street, Lahaina, HI 96761-1687

(808) 667-7005

Richard, WCM’s Dive Master, visited the Smokehouse last week for the first time although he’d been curious about it for ages.

WCM: So, Rich, how did you like the Smokehouse?

Rich: It was great, the meat was smoked really well with lots of Kiawe flavor, the same scent you catch when pulling into Lahaina late in the afternoon. That’s the Smokehouse’s Kiawe fired ovens and when you bite into the ribs, they taste like that smell. Very good. There are no additives or preservatives in their meat, all the cooking is done with the smoke.

WCM: Sounds great. What else did you try?

Rich: The cornbread with mac butter was really good accompaniment with a sloppy plate – something to sop up the extra sauce because it would be a sin to waste it. Baked beans were some of the best I’ve had around here. Coleslaw was sweet and creamy like I like it. Hot link in the combo was just hot enough but not so hot it numbed my taste buds. Which would be a sin.

WCM: We heard they also had good sandwiches. Have you tried them?

Rich: Not yet but some guy was having the Roast Beef Plate with Sautéed Onions and Gravy while I was waiting for the order and it looked really great. They have Fried Pork Chop plates, Kalbi Rib plates and I’m going back in this week for the Meatloaf Sandwich Plate. They all come with rice and potato salad, of course.

WCM: Anything you’d offer as criticism?

Rich: The portions could be a little bigger.

WCM: Are you serious? You got six ribs, a full quarter pound hot link, half pint of coleslaw, half pint of beans, slab ‘o cornbread and you didn’t get enough?

Rich: You trying to make me feel bad?

WCM: Uh, never. Let’s just write that it was so good you wanted more.

Rich: That’s right; which is why I’m going back soon.

Smokehouse Fried Shrimp Appetizer

WCM: I’m writing that down. After trying it myself I can understand why. I thought it was surprisingly good, too. I understand now why they are also famous for their Fried Shrimp. Reminded me of that famous fish joint where I used to get in a little brown sack down on Ohio Street in Chicago.

Rich: ZZzzzzzz

WCM: Okay, I get the hint. How did you like the ambiance?

Rich: It’s sweet in its simplicity. Just the kind of place you want to duck into and have a beer while you wait for the order to come out. Not sure I’d take a first date there but a second would show you if she’s a good sport. They run happy hour from 3-6 pm with $2 Domestic Drafts. They also serve until 1 a.m. with a special late night food menu. Wanna see it? I picked one up…

Rich: Meaning?

WCM: Meaning hard working salt of the earth he-men who know what’s good and what isn’t. And who can eat a lot.

Rich: There you go.

WCM: In any case, appears to be perfect for those nights when you worked late or want to catch the Taiwan football game live broadcast at midnight.

Rich: It’s good for anytime, from 11:30-9 p.m. Monday through Friday for the carry out and dining room menu, (see below) and until 1 most nights at the bar with that special bar menu.

WCM: Thanks for turning us on to the Smokehouse, Rich.

Rich: Done with great pleasure. Aloha!
