Best Maui Restaurants – Lunch!

Lunch is one of the best things to do in Maui. Restaurant tabs can get out of control at dinner, so enjoying the best restaurants Maui has to offer during lunch can be a way to stretch your dollar without scrimping on experiences.

Here are our suggestions for lunch from Kapalua to Kahana. We’ve noted the most outstanding aspect of the recommendation whether cost ($$$), views, the food quality, healthy choice and in one case – the locally brewed beer!

Lunch at the Sea House is always a special occasion.

Lunch at the Sea House is always a special occasion.

Sea House Restaurant $-$$ VIEWS/FOOD
The Sea House Restaurant is one of WCMs favorite places to enjoy a long lunch on one of the best bays in Maui. Napili Kai Resort, with low-slung condos encircling a powdery sand crescent, harkens to a former era where beach lovers and snorkelers often linger long past sunset. The Sea House Restaurant takes full advantage of its premium position right on the sand and serves breakfast and lunch as satisfying as the location. Delicious island style fare such as Crusted Ahi, Chicken Mango, or Papaya Salad with Steamed Prawns are always a delight. Daily lunch specials, sandwiches, and award winning appetizers round out the menu, with everything priced between $8-16.

Pineapple Grill $-$$ FOOD/VIEW/DEAL
A favored restaurant for visitors, golfers, and island business folk, Pineapple Grill has relaxed, attentive service with dining available in the restaurant, at the bar, or on the lanai, overlooking the Bay Course and Kapalua Tennis Gardens. Terrific menu options include choices of delectable pupus, salads, sandwiches, amazing Panko Crusted Fish and Chips, Chicken Katsu, and Seared Salmon with Soba Noodles, ahi sashimi and juicy burgers. Kama`aina are treated to 15% off the food tab daily and Ohana club members get a $25 dining credit for every $250 spent at the restaurant.

Honolua Store $ DEAL
The venerable Honolua Store received a major facelift and expansion (along with the rest of Kapalua) but still offers terrific plate lunches, made-to-order and prepackaged sandwiches, pizza, burgers, hotdogs, made-to-order fresh salads with greens and veggies from Kapalua Farms, specialties such as crab melt, and two dinner specials per night. Most items are under $10, including the extremely popular Hobo Lunch which comes with two choices from the daily plate lunch (kalbi ribs, stuffed cabbage, spicy tofu, chicken katsu and the like), two scoop rice, macaroni or potato salad. Portions are large enough to share with a friend or pack and finish at dinner!

Café Kapalua $-$$ VIEW/HEALTHY CHOICE
Located in the Kapalua Adventure Center (former home of Vino’s restaurant) Café Kapalua has made quite a splash since it opened last fall offering healthful, fresh options with most ingredients raised at the Kapalua Farms down the street. The café fills a niche for resort guests and residents by offering early breakfasts, specialty coffee drinks but it’s the luscious lunch menu spotlighting wholesome foods such as wraps, salads, and sandwiches using many of the farm fresh ingredients grown locally that really distinguishes this restaurant as a top contender in the Maui Best Lunches category. Try the Spicy Chicken Lettuce Wraps. Lunch served 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Beach House $-$$ VIEWS
Don’t leave that padded chaise lounge just because you’re hungry! Shuffle over to the little Beach House Restaurant, sink into an equally comfortable chair and enjoy the same view of the beach you’ve had all morning. The menu at this off-site Ritz restaurant serves excellent fare such as burgers, salads, appetizers, and a WCM’s favorite – Maui onion rings, the good kind with lots of sweet onion and just a little batter. They’ve also added a delicious Maui Farms Salad (beets, goat cheese, great stuff) and Ahi Tostadas, which are superb! Even if you’re not enjoying a a beach day, fool yourself into thinking otherwise by stealing out for lunch at the Beach House.

Kahana Sands Restaurant $-$$ VIEWS/DEALS/FOOD
Kahana Sands serves breakfast and lunch from 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. daily and a late lunch from 2-5 p.m., which is the main beauty of this eatery. That, and the relaxed, unpretentious beachfront setting where condo guests and locals enjoy surprisingly good food. WCM loves the Piled High Bagel Plate as the perfect “swing” dish between breakfast and lunch while gym rats seem to adore the granola/yogurt/fresh fruit parfait any time of day. If you’re well past breakfast, the Oriental Chicken Salad Wrap is an outstanding choice. Besides burgers and melts, perennial lunch favorites, Kahana Sands also makes the best French Dip sandwich on Maui, while the Fish Tacos and the Baby Spinach Salad generate raves.

Gazebo $ VIEWS/DEAL
Gazebo always gets the vote for best breakfast on Maui but lunch is not to be overlooked. In fact, by arriving a little later you avoid the lines that gather before noon. The same fried rice that graces so many “favorite lists” and breakfast orders makes a delectable lunch option, along with the Monte Cristo sandwich, the unique bay shrimp salad, avocado burger or BLT. The food is inexpensive, wonderful, laid-back, intimate and perched alongside one of the best views in the world.

Okazuya Deli $-$$ FOOD/HEALTHY CHOICE/DEAL
This deli taught me to trust locals, since everyone I asked on my first visit to Maui told me to go here. That was long ago. Now I’m a local and have joined the ranks of people who tell everyone to stop in for great, inexpensive food, especially the fish and especially at lunch. What it lacks in atmosphere and space (no dining indoors) it makes up for in flavor and price. Serving Chicken Katzu, Kung Pao Chicken, Mahi Mahi Lemon Caper, Panko Fried or Broiled Fish ‘n Chips, Broiled Salmon with Sweet Thai Chili Sauce, Egg Fu Young, Tofu Chow Funn… need I go on?

Pizza Paradiso $-$$ GYROS/Kabobs/Pizza
WCM heads to this eatery when we need a fix of something Mediterranean, specifically GYROS or Greek Salad. Although, as the name indicates, they serve pizza by the slice, the real draw for us is the other side of the menu including kabobs, grilled pita, and the aforementioned best junk food on earth. Let’s be honest, gyros is so bad it’s good and this is a great place to get it. If you’re the type who just can’t do that to yourself Pizza Paradiso offers a few healthier menu items like grilled fish kabobs.

China Boat $-$$ DEAL
China Boat and their sister restaurant China Bowl is the only Chinese carryout north of Lahaina. They have recently refreshed their space, enhanced the outdoor dining area, and overall upgraded the surroundings so now it’s bright, fresh and inviting. The food is standard Chinese take-out fare but the big news is they are now open for lunch. Now you can satisfy that sudden urge for Szechwan Chicken, Walnut Shrimp or Hot and Sour Soup anytime it strikes!

Hot? Sunburned? Try Maui Brewing Co's Tasting Trio and Chill

Maui Brewing Company $-$$ BEER
Let’s say you really need to get out of the sun and enjoy some refreshment. What could be better than the place where they make the beer served on a bar that’s frozen? When the bartender offers you a Bikini Blond or Big Swell take it, but ask for the lunch menu, too. Look beyond Nachos, Cheese Fries and Pizza Bread and you’ll find Lettuce Wraps, Steamers and Hummus. On one hand there’s grilled Mahi-mahi and Veggie Burgers, on the other burgers, Bratwurst and pulled pork. You can order pizza or Grilled Shrimp salad made with hydroponic greens and the excellent house dressing – a cilantro and beer vinaigrette. In short, you can have great brews and tasty food in the same place! As long as you don’t expect an ocean view with that, you’ll be fine.

Plantation House $-$$ VIEW
Off the beaten track, at the top of the world on the Plantation Golf Course in Kapalua, rests the Plantation House. A beacon for golfers and retreat from the workaday world for everyone else, Plantation House is like a classic grand dame who is never fussy but always elegant. Breezes flutter in and out of the open windows through which diners have their choice of vistas – the distant Kapalua shoreline or the verdant pineapple fields and West Maui Mountains. The food is always great but brunch is unquestionably the best time to experience the Plantation House to fully enjoy the setting. Besides, no one makes Eggs Benedict or Bloody Mary’s like they do!
