After dinner, it’s show time! Stargazers gather in the lobby before following resident astronomers to the hotel rooftop and the home of the Great White, a 16 inch reflector telescope. Guests gather on benches on the rooftop perimeter, readjusting their night vision to the total darkness by gazing into the distant heavens aided by the astronomer’s laser pointer which seems to reach its mark light years away. Here, the red planet really looks red! The constellation configurations spring suddenly to life as they surely did for our ancestors.

During the show, astronomers regale  guests with stories of the ancient Polynesians who journeyed across great expanses of ocean guided only by the stars, a remarkable feat even today. When the adventurers saw the star Hokule`a directly overhead, they knew the Hawaiian Islands were close at hand. It is known as the Star of Gladness for this reason. Look straight up – you will see it.

Once the imagination is piqued and the mood is right, guests are ready for a peak into Great White to view celestial bodies many light years away, some that may have burned out long ago but whose transient light still glows across time and space. Or perhaps they may witness the rings and moons of Saturn, and if lucky as we were, spot a brilliant, rare moonbow arched over the ocean under the light of the full moon. Spotting Alpha Centauri sets the mind to dreaming of its mythical moon, Pandora, represented in the movie, Avatar.

The Star Show is offered at 7, 8, and 9 p.m. most nights, weather permitting, with special “Couples Only” shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 11 pm. Guests at the adults only venue also enjoy a glass of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to further enhance an enormously romantic evening.

Pulehu, an Italian Grill at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Villas, recently won the `Aipono Award for “Best Kept Secret” in Maui. Now that the secret is out, expect this hidden gem to garner even more awards next year.

The new Monday Night All-you-can-eat Italian Buffet may also be Maui’s best kept dining secret – but it won’t be for long. What’s Cooking Maui recently sampled nearly everything on the menu and found the Shrimp Scampi with Orzo to be divine; the fire roasted Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo absolutely delicious; and the pepperoni Pizza surprisingly addictive. Even the generally humble Spaghetti Marinara is a stand-out with vine ripened tomatoes enhanced by essential Italian seasonings that allow the fresh flavor of the lycopene rich fruit to stay true to its origins; a rarity in my experience.

Pulehu’s authentic flavor standouts are the result of new Chef Francois Milliet’s deft skills and refined palate. Born in Switzerland near the French border, after exploring his craft in such upscale and creative locations as Zermatt, the famed Cliff House in California, the Park Hyatt in Beaver Creek and others where truffles, caviar and rare ingredients graced the menus, the Chef’s kitchen philosophy has come full circle to conclude the best meal does not necessarily come from expensive or exotic imported ingredients; rather, it’s simple, locally sourced foodstuffs that allow him to deliver, “simple, well executed food using the best ingredients I can use. When you eat the food, you should taste what it is you’re eating.”

Pulehu has presented Chef Francois with the perfect opportunity to execute his notions; I had guessed his cooking philosophy from the first bite of that Marinara sauce! Or take the Tomato Bisque –  no overly thickened soup, as one typically finds on buffet menus, this was a bowl of delicate but rich flavors that truly satisfied. Another delight is the Four Cheese Ravioli with Pesto Cream sauce, amazing with the perfect combination of basil pesto which doesn’t overpower the fluffy cheese filling in the light pasta pillows.

There is more to the menu – authentic Italian capicola and prosciutto (which would be great mixed with some of the luscious melons also offered); olive tapenade and roasted peppers, fresh off the farm mixed greens to deck out with your choice of ingredients, and a classic Caesar that, like everything else on the menu, caresses the palate rather than smack you in the mouth. And yes, Virginia, there is also dessert, or dolci as in “la dolce vita.” Here is classic Tiramisu, rich cream laden layers of ladyfingers laced with espresso; light as heaven Cheesecake, possibly the fudgiest chocolate chip Brownie I’ve ever had outside my own kitchen, and homemade almond Biscotti that I wanted to stuff into my purse for breakfast the next morning. No, I didn’t. Instead, I made reservations for next Monday.

At least one foodie I know eats at Pineapple Grill nearly every day – and why not? Diamonds Ice Bar Kihei

Dive master Richard stumbled upon  Diamonds after a round of golf at Elliare Golf Club the other day and tells us the food is terrific.

Located in The Azeka Mauka shopping center on S. Kihei Rd. in the old Tip-Ups location, Richard reports they have a varied menu that runs the gamut of crowd pleasers from Mexican to Fish and Chips, and Cheesesteak Sandwich. “No wonder they couldn’t say what style food they served when I walked in to ask… they have everything!”

Richard spoke to Diamond’s Mgr. Damian who said they were currently working on a new menu which we will share with everyone very soon.

Diamonds Caesar Wrap

Meanwhile, they offer a very nice full bar, a pool table, shuffle board and multiple TVs for sports and distraction. Richard also reported, “There was a combo playing on the small stage that night but I couldn’t stay for that. I had the Mexican Burger with fries, and my friend had the Mexican Club Wrap, both were excellent and reasonable at $10.00. We most enjoyed the friendly service by our Bartender/Waitress, Linda. If you stop in, tell her Richard sent you!”

Diamonds Burger

Encouraged by Richard, other members of the WCM crew stopped by a few days later to check out Diamonds for themselves and found a lively happy hour bunch playing pool, the jukebox style games at the bar, bowling and grooving to the trio who had taken to the stage for the sundowners segment of the evening show. The decor was the typical wood floors, exposed beams, lots of windows – a warm sort of industrial space with plenty of room for dancing and meandering when the place gets crowded. For those who want to get away from it all or roll with their own posse in peace, there is an upstairs private bar with a sofa strewn lounge area loft overlooking the main action on the stage and dance floor below. All the makings for a very fun VIP party for those special occasions.

Diamond’s claim to fame is Happy Hour All Day, so they enjoy a loyal following of local patrons as well as some tourists who seem to be catching on to the place gradually. They also offer a discount on your first drink if you just came off the golf course, “So that was really cool for us,” Richard tells us.

Here you go – it’s kitchy and not all that “Maui” but the Front Street location is great and the breakfast menu so extensive that you can’t not like that as well as the great prices. We aren’t so convinced everything is made from scratch with free-range nest eggs and organic spinach but they don’t claim that either. We like Moose’s for just being what it is and they like you for the same reason.

Kahana Sands

Outstanding breakfast served from the ala carte brunch menu created by Chef Raul Ramirez, the resort dining room adjacent the swimming pool makes you feel relaxed right off the bat. A variety of healthy choices appear on the menu such as fruit/yogurt granola parfait done with unexpected flair and piled high smoked salmon platter, bowls of fresh berries and oatmeal with brown sugar and fruit alongside build your own omelets, carnitas and eggs, biscuits and gravy and the local standby – loco moco. Newest hotspot at Whaler’s Village fills a burning need for breakfast lovers in Kaanapali from sun-up to sundown.
